“Wings To Fly” was written mainly for my daughter and grew from something I had been telling her since she was young. She always had a very clear plan for her life. She didn’t want to have children until she had bought a house and found Mr Right. I used to tell her there was no guarantee of a Mr Right, sometimes there is only Mr Right Now, because people can come and go throughout our lives, while our children are forever. She wasn’t having a bar of my motherly wisdom. She wanted to live life her own way, and eventually I realised that was exactly what I had raised her to do.
The Story Behind "Wings To Fly"
As parents, we spend years teaching our children, protecting them and trying to prepare them for whatever life might throw at them. We pack their lunches, find their missing shoes, drive them to school and worry about things they probably don’t even know we’re worrying about. Then one day they grow up and start making decisions for themselves. Some of those decisions may not be the ones we would make for them, but eventually we have to accept that their life belongs to them.
That was the heart of “Wings To Fly.” My daughter had her own ideas about the life she wanted and I had mine. I could give her advice, tell her what I had learned from my own experiences and probably annoy her with a few more opinions along the way, but I couldn’t live her life for her. At some point, you have to trust that everything you have taught your child is somewhere inside them and let them spread their wings in whichever direction they choose.
Today my daughter has a toddler of her own, my grandson, and motherhood has given her a completely different understanding of the relationship between a mother and her child. The future she imagined when she was younger didn’t unfold exactly according to plan. My grandson’s father is no longer part of her life, and she has learned for herself that relationships can change, people can leave and life can take turns that none of us expected.
That experience became one of the most important ideas in the chorus: “When you fall, I’ll still be around. I’ll hold you close until you’re ready to face another round.” It isn’t about preventing my daughter from falling, because no parent can do that forever. It is about making sure she knows that if life knocks her down, she has somewhere safe to land while she finds the strength to get back up again.
There is also a little letting go hidden inside the song. “I won’t chain you, darling, no, I won’t ask you to stay” is my acknowledgement that loving your child doesn’t mean keeping them beside you. You give them roots so they know where home is, but you also give them wings so they can build a life that belongs to them. Whether they fly exactly where you expected them to or disappear over a completely different horizon, those wings were always theirs.
Now that my daughter is a mother herself, she understands some of the things I was trying to tell her all those years ago. One day my grandson will grow up too, and she will find herself standing on the other side of the same experience. She will want to protect him, advise him and probably tell him that she knows better. He may not listen either. That is part of growing up, and perhaps part of being a parent is discovering that sometimes the greatest act of love is simply saying: I gave you wings, now go fly.
The Music and Vibe
Musically, “Wings To Fly” is a hybrid production driven mainly by bass, guitar, drums and synths, with digital FX and different percussion elements woven through the arrangement. I wanted the production to carry the emotion of the lyrics without overwhelming them, allowing the story and vocal to remain at the centre of the song.
The arrangement grows with the story. The earlier sections reflect the intimacy of a parent remembering the small moments of childhood, while the later sections become bigger and more expansive as the daughter begins to fly on her own. By the time the song reaches “Go fly away, higher than the clouds,” the music has opened up with her, turning a very personal conversation between a mother and daughter into something much broader about growing up, letting go and finding your own place in the world.
At its heart, “Wings To Fly” isn’t really about a parent telling a child which road to take. It is about giving them enough love, strength and security to choose their own road, while making sure they know that wherever it leads, there will always be someone behind them saying, “I’ll be around.”
Wings To Fly by Chuck A Beat Lyrics
Intro
From the minute you were born,
Yeah… I just knew
That I’d always be there for you,
The highs… the lows…
whatever life throws…
I’ll always hold you close…
Verse 1
Packed your lunch, in a little plastic box
Passed you your shoes, and your tiny socks
Drove you to school for the very first time
Gave you a proud smile, knew you were mine
(Yeah… you were mine)
Chorus
I gave you wings so you can fly
Go on now… go reach for the sky
When you fall, I’ll still be around…
I’ll hold you close until you’re ready
To face another round
(I’ll be around…)
I’ll be around…
(I’ll be around…)
Verse 2
One day you’ll build, with your own two hands
Memories of your own, yeah… wherever you land
But every brave place, you call your own
You’ll always know that you can call ME home
(Come home…)
Chorus
I gave you wings so you can fly
Go on now… go reach for the sky
Higher, baby… higher than I ever could
(Fly… fly…fly…)
And when you fall, I’ll still be around hmmm…
I’ll hold you close until you’re ready
To face another round
(Yeah…)
Bridge
And if your heart gets heavy
Lay it down where you can…
On the porch of your memory,
In the palm of my hand
I won’t chain you, darling,
No… I won’t ask you to stay
I just hope when you rise…
(When you rise…)
When you spread those wings…
(Spread those wings…)
You remember my face…
Break
Go now…
Go fly!
Go fly away!
Higher than the clouds, all the way
Go fly!
Go fly!
There’s a whole wide world you don’t yet know
(Ohhh… fly, baby, fly!)
Final Chorus
I gave you wings so you can FLY!
See now, little darling…
YOU REACHED THE SKY!
(Look at you now!)
And if you fall again
I’ll STILL be around…
(I’ll be right here…)
I’ll hold you close until you’re ready
To face another round
Outro
So fly…
(Fly…)
Go live the life that’s yours to find
And don’t you worry about leaving me behind…
I gave you roots…
(Yeah…)
But those wings?
(Yeah…)
They’re yours, baby!
(Yeah…)
Now go on…
Fly…
Fly…
Fly…
(I’ll be around…)
Fly…
(I’ll be around…)
Yeah…
