"Try To Rob Me" began with a real-life experience that happened many years ago when I was raising my young children. One day, shortly after I drove away from home with the kids, a burglar attempted to break into my house. Fortunately, my neighbour spotted what was happening and effectively became my security camera for the day, catching the intruder in the act and helping ensure they were chased away before any serious damage was done.

While that real event planted the original seed for the song, the idea quickly evolved into something much bigger. Rather than writing a straightforward song about a burglary, I began exploring the idea of people who try to rob more than just your possessions. Some people try to rob your confidence, your happiness, your trust, your dreams, or even your heart. "Try To Rob Me" became a playful, cheeky anthem about refusing to let anyone take what matters most.

The Story Behind "Try To Rob Me"

Built around humour, confidence, and a healthy dose of karma, "Try To Rob Me" follows a character who refuses to be anyone's victim. Whether it's a burglar sneaking through a window, a scammer trying their luck, or someone attempting to steal her heart under false pretences, she sees them coming and turns the tables before they get away with anything.

The song uses the imagery of a robbery as a metaphor for all the people we encounter throughout life who try to take something from us. Sometimes it's money. Sometimes it's trust. Sometimes it's our self-belief. Through every verse and chorus, the message remains the same, know your worth, trust your instincts, and never hand your power over to someone who hasn't earned it.

The Music and Vibe

Musically, "Try To Rob Me" is built around a strong bass and drum driven groove that immediately establishes the song's confident attitude. The track carries a playful retro soul-pop flavour, with a swaggering rhythm and infectious energy that feels reminiscent of the character and punch found in songs such as Duffy's "Mercy". From the opening lines, the music creates the feeling that the listener is stepping into a story where somebody has seriously underestimated the wrong woman.

While the lyrics are packed with humour, storytelling, and a healthy dose of karma, the driving bass line and drums provide the song's momentum and swagger. The retro soul-pop influences help create a playful atmosphere while allowing the story and character to remain front and centre throughout the track. Every verse pushes the narrative forward while each chorus reinforces the song's confidence, energy, and larger-than-life personality.

The production balances humour and attitude throughout, creating a track that feels both fun and empowering. Rather than dwelling on victimhood, the song celebrates resilience, clever thinking, and the satisfaction that comes from turning the tables on people who underestimate you. It's playful, cheeky, and designed to leave listeners smiling while quietly reminding them that confidence is often the best defence of all.

Finding the right singer for "Try To Rob Me" proved surprisingly difficult. I spent several months looking for a vocalist who could deliver the humour, confidence, attitude, and personality the song required. Plenty of singers had great voices, but this particular song needed someone who could bring a very specific character to life rather than simply sing the notes.

During that search, a performance reel by Holly Wild appeared in my Facebook feed. Her vocal style immediately caught my attention and I felt she had the confidence and character that could suit "Try To Rob Me". After unsuccessfully attempting to contact her through Facebook Messenger, I eventually reached her through Instagram. Once we connected, I sent her a number of song demos and discussions began about recording together.

Interestingly, "Try To Rob Me" was not originally one of the songs scheduled for Holly's Melbourne studio session. The plan was for her to record "Club 27" and "Joke's On You", which had been selected beforehand as the tracks best suited to her voice. After those recordings were completed, however, we still had some studio time available.

With the session running smoothly and time remaining, I made a last minute decision to ask Holly if she would be interested in trying "Try To Rob Me". Although the song had not been part of the original recording schedule, she agreed to give it a go. The combination worked far better than I had expected, with Holly bringing exactly the right mix of attitude, humour, confidence, and playful energy that the song demanded.

What began as an unplanned addition to the day's recording session ultimately became the final recorded version of "Try To Rob Me". Sometimes the songs that take the longest to cast end up finding the right voice when you least expect it.

Try To Rob Me by Chuck A Beat Lyrics

Intro
You thought you had me, huh?
Nah, I saw you comin'...

Verse 1
You slipped in smooth, like a midnight breeze,
Thought you could snatch my cash with ease,
Tip-toe shoes and a hoodie on tight,
But I booby trapped my house last night!

Chorus
Try to rob me, Uh huh
But I got you now, Oh yeah!
You thought I'd scream,
But I turned around, POW!
Try to rob me, Mmm hmm
Not today, somehow,
You better run,
'Cause karma's comin' down!

Verse 2
You cracked my code like you're super slick,
But forgot I'm a girl with a few neat tricks,
Got lasers, bells, and a baseball bat,
Even set a trap for your sticky hat!

Chorus
Try to rob me, Yeah baby!
But I locked you in, That's right!
Alarms went wild,
And I called your twin,
Try to rob me, You clown!
With that creepy grin,
But now you're caught,
Wrapped up like a bin!

Bridge
You thought you were sly?
I saw it in your eyes!
You thought I'd just cry?
I filmed it for the likes!
You thought you were ghostin'?
Oh, oh You're toastin'!
You thought you were slick?
Oh, You're pickin' up sticks!

Verse 3
Now you're beggin', baby, beggin' please,
But I'm dancin' while you're on your knees,
Next time you try to rob a queen,
Best believe I'll steal the scene!

Final Chorus
Try to rob me, Whoo!
But the joke's on you, Yes it is!
I ain't no fool,
And now you're on the news!
Try to rob me, Bye bye!
This ain't nothin' new,
Mess with the best,
End up a busted crew!

Outro
Better luck next time, genius.
Oh wait… there ain't no next time.
