"Oi You" was inspired by a real incident I witnessed while living in London. One afternoon I watched a bloke storm into a pub complaining that the pub's tiny little dog had caused him to trip over an outdoor chair and scrape his knee. The dog itself was about as threatening as a fluffy slipper, but the way he carried on you'd think he'd just survived an attack from a pack of wolves.

The whole scene was pure comedy. The more he complained, the funnier it became. There was something wonderfully British about a grown man marching into a pub demanding justice over a barking lap dog while everyone else tried not to laugh. I remember thinking at the time that the incident sounded more like the start of a pub song than a genuine argument.

The Story Behind "Oi You"

Rather than writing a serious song about conflict, I decided to lean into the humour of the situation. "Oi You" became a playful back and forth between an overdramatic complainer and the pub crowd who have absolutely no intention of taking him seriously. The song exaggerates the argument for comic effect, turning a scraped knee and a tiny barking dog into a full blown pub showdown.

At its heart the song captures the colourful characters that make pubs such great places for people watching. Every regular has met someone who walks in looking for sympathy and ends up becoming the evening's entertainment instead. The lyrics celebrate that cheeky pub humour where quick wit always wins and nobody takes themselves too seriously.

The Music and Vibe

Musically "Oi You" blends soft pop and reggae influences with a laid back groove driven by bass guitar, rhythm guitar and bright trumpet lines. The relaxed rhythm creates the perfect backdrop for the story, allowing the humour and characters to take centre stage while keeping listeners smiling from beginning to end.
