“Odin’s Roar” came about because I was researching what music was trending on YouTube in 2026, and I discovered something that made me laugh. Viking-inspired music was apparently having one hell of a moment. Everywhere I looked, there were Vikings, Odin, Thor, Valhalla, longships, ravens, snow-covered mountains and enough thunder to blow the roof off Asgard. So naturally, being the curious little shit that I am, I decided to investigate what all the fuss was about.

The Story Behind "Odin’s Roar"

Before writing “Odin’s Roar,” I had actually written another song called “Vikings,” which I haven't released yet. Both songs were inspired by the same discovery, although lyrically and musically they're completely different. I'd been looking through YouTube's trending statistics and researching the popularity of different music genres when I noticed just how much attention Viking-style music was attracting. That got me wondering what these channels were doing that had people watching their videos by the millions.

So I started investigating some of the most-watched Viking music channels on YouTube, and bloody hell, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Song after song seemed to be recycling the same themes, the same familiar words and practically the same lyrical structure, just rearranged slightly. Odin, Thor, Valhalla, ravens, frost, snow, battles, warriors and the inevitable journey to some mythical place. Musically, so much of it had that same slow, sorrowful, dramatic sound. Different songs, different channels, but to my ears they were all beginning to sound remarkably alike.

Now don't get me wrong. I have absolutely nothing against Viking music, Norse mythology or using AI to create music. I use AI tools myself, and I think they're bloody fantastic when used creatively. What amused me was how a thousand years of fascinating Viking history had apparently been reduced to a handful of words that could be thrown into an AI prompt and turned into another Viking anthem. And somehow these songs were attracting enormous audiences. I thought, you've got to be fucking kidding me!

That's when my sarcastic brain decided to get involved. Instead of writing another solemn Viking anthem about warriors sailing through misty fjords on their way to Valhalla, I thought I'd write something that actually took the piss out of the whole trend. Not the people enjoying the music, because clearly millions of people love it, but the repetitive formulas I kept hearing. If everyone else was going to keep singing about Odin, Thor, ravens and snow, I was going to throw the whole bloody lot into a song and have some fun with it.

The opening verse pretty much explains where my head was going: “Real Vikings crossed the ocean, these ones crossed a prompt. Leif Erikson found Vinland, these cunts just found a font.” I was laughing when I wrote that because the contrast was ridiculous. The original Vikings crossed dangerous oceans in wooden longships without GPS, computers or modern navigation. A thousand years later, we've got people sitting comfortably at home creating Viking music with a laptop. The Vikings have gone from raiding European coastlines to raiding the YouTube algorithm. You couldn't make this shit up. Well, apparently I could!

I also wanted to bring some actual Viking history into the madness. Leif Erikson reaching Vinland long before Columbus, the Scandinavian origins of the Vikings, their voyages, their trading and their raids all gave me something real to play with. Rather than writing another generic song about warriors and glory, I wanted to mix historical references with modern technology, popular culture and my own completely warped Australian sense of humour.

Then there's Chris Hemsworth. Being Australian, how the hell could I write a song about Thor without mentioning that Hollywood's most famous modern version of the thunder god came out of Melbourne? So in he went. “Thor came out of Melbourne, smashing box offices worldwide. From longships into spaceships, fuck, those Vikings learned to fly.” Obviously, the mythical Thor wasn't born in Melbourne, but the actor playing him certainly was. And after watching Thor go from Norse mythology to Marvel spaceships, I couldn't resist having a crack at that either.

The bridge takes another ridiculous detour into Norse mythology with Odin, Jörð and the birth of Thor. According to Norse mythology, Jörð is Thor's mother, so naturally I decided to turn the whole thing into a cheeky little family scandal. “Odin and Jord had an affair, but even back then nobody cared.” It's not supposed to be a serious historical or mythological documentary, for fuck's sake. It's a rock song having a laugh with ancient legends and modern absurdities.

But the biggest joke is really on me. After spending all that time writing and producing my own music across different genres, here I was watching Viking channels rack up millions of views with what sounded to me like variations of the same formula. So by the final chorus I decided to stop pretending I wasn't noticing and wrote: “Ten million fucking views for another Viking hit. Maybe I've been doing music wrong, I need more Viking shit.” That line sums up the entire inspiration behind the song. It's sarcastic, it's ridiculous, and there's a little bit of genuine curiosity hiding underneath the humour.

And of course I couldn't finish the song without asking Odin himself for a favour. “Oi Odin... Can ya chuck me ten million views?” I mean, if the old bloke is apparently helping everyone else conquer YouTube, surely he can spare a few million views for an Aussie songwriter taking the piss out of the whole thing. Lol.

That's really what “Odin’s Roar” is about. It's my musical commentary on the Viking music explosion, AI-generated content, YouTube algorithms and the strange things that become popular online. I'm not attacking AI music or Viking fans. I'm having a laugh at the repetition, the formulas and the absurdity of watching ancient Norse warriors become twenty-first-century internet celebrities. And yes, the irony of using modern music technology to create a song mocking AI Viking music is entirely intentional. That's half the bloody joke!

The Music and Vibe

Musically, I wanted “Odin’s Roar” to sound completely different from the slow, sorrowful Viking songs that originally inspired it. I wasn't interested in creating another mournful anthem with endless chanting and gloomy atmospheres. I wanted energy, attitude and a bloody great big beat. So I built the song around an upbeat metal-rock sound with thumping drums, deep bass, powerful male and female duet vocals and a cinematic edge that gives the music some genuine Viking-sized muscle.

The duet was an important part of the composition. Rather than having one voice deliver the entire song, I wanted the male and female vocals to give it contrasting personalities and plenty of power. The voices needed to carry the sarcasm in the verses while still sounding strong enough to deliver those big, thunderous choruses. There's a deliberate contrast between the outrageous lyrics and the epic musical production. The song sounds like it's preparing to conquer the world while the lyrics are busy taking the piss out of the very genre it's celebrating.

I also wanted the chorus to be instantly memorable. “Vikings, Vikings, back from history” gives it that big, chant-like opening, but instead of heading into another serious tale of Norse glory, it turns straight into a joke about flooding people's feeds and throwing familiar Viking words into an AI prompt. The heavy drums and driving bass keep the momentum going while the repeated lines give the hook something people can latch onto.

The final chorus deliberately changes direction again. By that point the song has already explored Viking history, Norse mythology, Hollywood and artificial intelligence, so I decided to finish with a full-blown parody of the Viking music formula itself. “Grab an axe, grow a beard, and chuck in some snow.” Add a raven, a mountain, Valhalla, a bit of thunder and apparently you've got yourself another potential YouTube hit. It was my way of turning everything I'd discovered during my research into one big, ridiculous musical punchline.

The production is what I describe as hybrid music. I write all my own lyrics, develop the musical composition and beats, and work with musicians and AI music tools to construct the full arrangement. The process combines real musical performances with digital instruments and AI-generated elements, rather than relying exclusively on one method of production.

Once the musical arrangement has been developed, the production is taken into the studio, where real instruments and digital elements are brought together through the mixing and mastering process. My aim is to combine the creativity and character of human musicianship with the flexibility of modern digital technology. I don't see any reason why traditional musicians and AI tools can't work together. For me, they're simply different ways of bringing the music I hear in my head to life.

And that's what makes “Odin’s Roar” particularly amusing to me. It's a hybrid-produced song that pokes fun at AI Viking music while using some of the very technologies that helped create the trend. The difference is that I wanted to put my own writing, humour, musical direction and personality into it rather than simply repeating the same familiar formula.

At its heart, “Odin’s Roar” is an upbeat, thunderous, cheeky metal-rock anthem about Vikings conquering the internet instead of Europe. It's part Norse mythology, part historical comedy, part commentary on AI music and entirely my own warped take on what's happening in the music world. Whether people laugh at the lyrics, enjoy the music or just want to bang their heads along with the drums, I'm happy. And if Odin happens to be listening, I'm still waiting for those ten million fucking views!

Odin’s Roar by Odin’s Roar & Chuck A Beat Lyrics

Verse 1
Real Vikings crossed the ocean
These ones crossed a prompt
Leif Erikson found Vinland
These cunts just found a font
Vikings sailed to Greenland
Then all the way to Rome
Now they sail through YouTube
From a laptop sitting at home
Home, home, home, home, home, home, home, home, home, home

Chorus
Vikings, Vikings
Back from history
A thousand years of silence
Now they’re flooding fucking feeds
Odin, Thor, Valhalla
Raven, frost and snow
Chuck it in an AI prompt
And watch the fucker blow
And watch the fucker blow

Verse 2
Vikings sailed from Norway
From Denmark and from Sweden
Raiding half of Europe
Like the whole damn place was free then
A thousand years went by
Thought the Vikings were all gone
Then Australia sent us Chris
With a hammer riding storms
Thor came out of Melbourne
Smashing box offices worldwide
From longships into spaceships
Fuck, those Vikings learned to fly

Verse 3
Leif Erikson found Vinland
Long before Columbus knew
They sailed without a Google Map
What the fuck can’t Vikings do?
They raided and they traded
From Greenland down to Rome
Now they raid the algorithm
From the comfort of their home

Chorus
Vikings, Vikings
Back from history
A thousand years of silence
Now they’re flooding fucking feeds
Odin, Thor, Valhalla
Raven, frost and snow
Chuck it in an AI prompt
And watch the fucker blow
And watch the fucker blow

Bridge
Odin and Jord had an affair
But even back then nobody cared
Thor was born with a hammer in his hand
And nobody even gave a shitty damn
Hear Odin’s roar
Rolling from the shore
A thousand years have passed
But the Vikings rise once more
The Vikings rise once more
Hear the thunder as they ride
Swap the sword for AI
With an Aussie god inside

Final Chorus
Viking, Viking
here we fuckin’ go
Grab an axe, grow a beard
And chuck in some snow
Raven on a mountain
Valhalla in the night
Let AI write some bullshit
And watch the views ignite
Viking, Viking
Give the algorithm more
Fjords and flames and thunder
Like it hasn’t seen before
Ten million fucking views
For another Viking hit
Maybe I’ve been doing music wrong
I need more Viking shit
ohh-o-ohhh, ohh-o-ohhh
Need more Viking shit
ohh-o-ohhh, ohh-o-ohhh
Need more Viking shit
ohh-o-ohhh, ohh-o-ohhh

Outro
Hear Odin’s roar...
Rolling from the shore...

Spoken
Oi Odin...
Can ya chuck me ten million views?
hmmm…mmm
