“Nirvana” was written as a birthday present to myself. At its heart, the song is about knowing who you are, finding peace within yourself and reaching that point in life where you realise you don’t have to keep chasing everything, fixing everything or proving anything to anyone. I already know who I am. I’ve lived enough life to know that peace doesn’t necessarily arrive when everything around you becomes perfect. Sometimes it arrives when you finally stop allowing everything around you to control how you feel.
The Story Behind "Nirvana"
The idea behind “Nirvana” came from thinking about how much of our lives we spend chasing the next thing. More money, more time, another relationship, another achievement, another answer. We convince ourselves that once we get there, wherever “there” happens to be, everything will finally fall into place and we’ll be happy. Then we get there and discover another mountain sitting behind the one we just climbed.
Eventually I realised that peace isn’t necessarily something waiting for us at the end of the road. Sometimes it is buried underneath all the fucking noise we create while trying to get there. That became the centre of the song: “I found nirvana when I stopped chasing after everything I thought I had to be.” It isn’t about giving up on ambition or deciding you don’t want anything more from life. Fuck that. I still have plenty I want to do. It is about knowing the difference between wanting something and believing you need it before you can be happy.
There is also a lot of acceptance running through the lyrics. I’ve carried yesterday around like everyone else does. Things I should have done differently, people who came and went, decisions that changed the direction of my life and all those useless little conversations we have with ourselves about what could have been. But the past can’t change the road I’m standing on today, and tomorrow isn’t promised to any of us. At some point you either keep dragging that suitcase behind you or put the fucking thing down.
The bridge probably explains the philosophy of the song better than anything else: “Maybe heaven isn’t in the sky, maybe paradise is being alive.” Nirvana doesn’t have to be some mystical destination, perfect existence or grand revelation. It can simply be reaching a place where you know who you are, understand what matters to you and, perhaps more importantly, understand what doesn’t.
Ironically, writing a song about inner peace managed to piss me right the fuck off before I could even release it. DistroKid refused to deliver the song to streaming services because I called it “Nirvana.” Their email indirectly suggested that I was using the title to piggyback on the name of the band Nirvana. Seriously? The word “nirvana” existed in the dictionary for a very fucking long time before Nirvana became a band, and my song has absolutely nothing to do with the band. I didn’t name it after them. I named it after the actual meaning of the damn word, which is precisely what the entire song is about.
So there was something beautifully ridiculous about an algorithm deciding that a song about letting go of things you can’t control should immediately give me something I couldn’t control. Apparently the universe has a sense of humour. Did I calmly embrace my inner nirvana and accept it? Fuck no. I got pissed off. I’m enlightened, not dead.
But that actually reinforces what the song means to me. Finding peace doesn’t mean you suddenly stop getting angry, frustrated, excited, ambitious or passionate. It doesn’t mean becoming emotionally bulletproof. It means those things don’t get to define who you are. You can swear at an algorithm today and still know exactly who you are tomorrow.
I wrote “Nirvana” as a birthday present to myself, and perhaps that is why it feels particularly personal. After all the years of looking forward, looking backwards, building things, losing things, starting again and wondering what might be around the next corner, the answer turned out to be ridiculously simple. I didn’t need to find myself. I already fucking knew who I was. I just needed to make peace with her.
The Music and Vibe
Musically, “Nirvana” sits somewhere between a rock anthem and pop rock, with punchy drums, gritty guitars and a heavy bass foundation giving the song plenty of weight and drive. I didn’t want something soft and floaty just because the lyrics are about finding peace. My version of peace still has a fucking pulse.
The arrangement builds around that contrast. The verses carry the reflection and hindsight of the story, while the choruses open up into something bigger and more anthemic. The repeated “Nir-va-na” sections give the song its pop flavour without taking away the grit of the guitars, drums and bass underneath it.
By the final chorus, the perspective has shifted from searching for peace to owning it. “I finally made my peace with me” is really the destination of the whole song. Nothing outside the door necessarily changed. Life didn’t suddenly become perfect. The difference is that I stopped expecting the outside world to provide something that had been sitting inside me all along.
At its heart, “Nirvana” is a rock song about reaching the point where you can look at your life, the good, the bad, the stupid decisions, the scars, the victories and all the unfinished business, and still say: this is my life, I know who I am, and I’m at peace with me.
Nirvana by Chuck A Beat Lyrics
Intro
I kept looking for a place
I could finally escape
Somewhere nothing left a scar
Maybe I was looking way too far
(Mmm...)
Verse 1
I chased tomorrow all my life
Thinking everything would turn out right
When I had the money, had the time
Had somebody sleeping by my side
Every mountain had another view
Every dream just made me want something new
Kept believing happiness would come
When all the chasing finally was done
Pre-Chorus
Then one day I realised
Peace was never something I could find
It was waiting underneath the noise
Waiting for me to make the choice
Chorus
I found nirvana
When I stopped chasing after
Everything I thought I had to be
Nirvana
No more looking for the answer
To a question that was killing me
I let go
Of everything I couldn't control
And suddenly I could breathe
Yeah, nirvana
Wasn't somewhere in the distance
It was always here with me
Post-Chorus
Nir-va-na
Na-na, nir-va-na
I can breathe
I can breathe
Nir-va-na
Na-na, nir-va-na
Nothing left to prove to me
Verse 2
Used to carry yesterday around
Like a suitcase I could never put down
Every memory took another space
Every regret had somebody's face
But the past can't change the road I'm on
And tomorrow isn't promised to anyone
So I stopped asking what could've been
And started loving where I am again
Pre-Chorus
Funny how the world gets quiet
When you finally stop trying to fight it
Nothing changed outside my door
I just didn't need it anymore
Chorus
I found nirvana
When I stopped chasing after
Everything I thought I had to be
Nirvana
No more looking for the answer
To a question that was killing me
I let go
Of everything I couldn't control
And suddenly I could breathe
Yeah, nirvana
Wasn't somewhere in the distance
It was always here with me
Bridge
Maybe heaven isn't in the sky
Maybe paradise is being alive
Maybe freedom isn't getting more
Maybe it's knowing what you don't need anymore
No golden gates
No grand design
No perfect place
No perfect time
Just this heart
Just this life
And for once...
That's enough tonight
Breakdown
Nir-va-na...
I searched the whole damn world
For something I already had
Nir-va-na...
All those years looking forward
Never knowing how to look within
Final Chorus
I found nirvana
When I stopped chasing after
Everything the world said I should be
Nirvana
I don't need another answer
I finally made my peace with me
I let go
Of everything I couldn't control
Now nothing's holding onto me
Yeah, nirvana
Wasn't waiting in the distance
It was always here with me
Outro
Nir-va-na
Na-na, nir-va-na
No more running
No more chasing
Nir-va-na
Na-na, nir-va-na
I found peace
When I stopped searching for it
(Mmmmmm...)
Nirvana.
Yeah... it found me.
Hmmmmm…
