“Heart Spell” happened despite the fact that I don’t particularly like writing love songs. They’re not usually where my brain naturally wants to go, but hey, shit happens. When an idea decides to turn up in my head, I normally have two choices: ignore the stupid thing while it keeps annoying me, or follow it and see where it goes. This time my brain apparently wanted romance, so I gave in, but there was no way I was going to write a standard sweet little love song. If I was doing romance, it was getting some cheek, some flirting and a personality of its own.
The Story Behind "Heart Spell"
“Heart Spell” is really about that instant physical attraction where common sense quietly packs its bags and leaves the building. You meet someone, there’s chemistry, you taste their lips and suddenly it’s bye-bye. You’re not standing there calculating where the relationship might be going or worrying about what happens next. You’re going with the flow and enjoying whatever the hell is happening between you.
That is why the chorus doesn’t waste much time pretending to be shy about it: “I wanna taste your lips, hold you by the hips, carry you to my room.” There’s attraction, desire and romance all tangled together, but it never takes itself too seriously. Even “I’ll make your flower bloom” deliberately gives the song a cheeky little wink instead of spelling everything out for you. I think you can work that one out for yourselves.
As I kept writing, though, the song started becoming more than just physical attraction. That initial spark begins turning into something neither person necessarily planned. Suddenly it isn’t only about kissing someone, carrying them to the bedroom and sleeping in until noon. There is that slightly terrifying moment when you realise this person has somehow slipped past all your defences and started fucking around with your heart as well.
Verse three probably captures the personality of the song best for me: “Every kiss just gets me high, yeah, one taste and I’m bye-bye.” Sometimes that really is all it takes. One kiss, one taste, one ridiculous bit of chemistry and your sensible brain can go sit in the corner because apparently it is no longer involved in the decision-making process. You just go with it without worrying too much about the consequences. Lol.
I also wanted to have some fun with the usual romantic imagery rather than simply throwing moons, stars, sunrises and Cupid into the lyrics because that is what love songs are apparently supposed to do. So Cupid is working late, the moon is blushing pink, the stars are winking and the sunrise has been told to bloody wait. If I was going to write a love song, even the universe was going to have to play along.
By verse four, the joke is on the person who thought this was only going to be a bit of fun. “Yeah baby, you stole my common sense” pretty much sums it up. What began with attraction has turned into falling properly and unexpectedly for someone. Sometimes you don’t decide to fall in love. Someone walks into your life, scrambles your common sense, steals your heart and suddenly the person who wasn’t planning a damn thing is talking about being committed till life ends.
That is the heart of “Heart Spell.” It isn’t trying to explain love or turn it into some perfect fairytale. It is about chemistry taking over before your brain has caught up, then discovering there might actually be something deeper hiding underneath all that flirting. One minute you’re tasting somebody’s lips. The next minute you’re wondering who the fuck stole your common sense. Apparently, love works fast when it wants to.
The Music and Vibe
Musically, “Heart Spell” is an upbeat pop song built around a catchy, playful hook. I spend a lot of time working on hooks because I want the part people remember after the song finishes. I’ll twist words around, change the rhythm, move lines, sing them differently in my head and keep fucking with the lyrics until they finally hit the way I want them to.
The chorus was designed to be immediate and easy to latch onto, with the short phrases and pauses giving each line its own little punch: taste your lips, hold you by the hips, carry you to my room, sleep in till noon, then fly you to the moon. The rhymes keep it light and playful while the lyrics gradually move between flirting, physical attraction and something much more emotionally committed.
The upbeat production suits that personality. This isn’t a love song standing in the rain staring tragically through somebody’s window. It has energy. It flirts. It smiles at its own dirty little thoughts. Even when the lyrics eventually admit that the attraction has become something much deeper, the song keeps that playful streak running through it.
At its heart, “Heart Spell” is my version of a love song: catchy, cheeky, romantic without becoming syrupy, a little bit naughty and fully aware that sometimes all your carefully constructed common sense can disappear after one bloody good kiss.
Heart Spell by Chuck A Beat Lyrics
Chorus
I wanna taste… your lips
Hold you by… the hips
Carry you to… my room
Hell yeah… I’ll make your flower… bloom
We’ll sleep in… till noon
Then fly ya to… the moon
(Uh-huh)
Verse 1
Baby let me hold… you close
Your scent got me comatose…
One more kiss, I'm hypnotized…
Lose ourselves till the morning… light
Verse 2
The moment I set eyes… on you
I just knew… it was true
That I’ll never feel… alone
I’d let you guide… me to the unknown
‘Cause I’ve never felt… this way
You just blew… my mind away
Chorus
Yeah…I said…
I wanna taste… your lips
Hold you by… the hips
Carry you to… my room
Hell yeah… I’ll make your flower… bloom
We’ll sleep in… till noon
Then fly ya to… the moon
Ah
Ah
Ah ah
Verse 3
Oh girl… have I told ya
That you're tastier… than apple pie
Got that sparkle… in your eye
Every kiss just gets… me high
Yeah… one taste and I’m… bye-bye
Bridge
I'll make the sunrise… wait
I'll have Cupid… workin' late
Oh, I'll make the moon… blush pink (woo)
Before the stars… all wink
Verse 4
Yeah baby, you stole my common… sense
Now I'm committed till life… ends
Never thought I'd fall… this hard
Till you went and stole… my heart
Chorus
Girl, have I told ya that
I love the taste… of your lips
Holdin’ you by… the hips
Carrin’ you to… my room
Hell yeah… makin’ your flower… bloom
We still sleep in… till noon
Then stare up at… the moon
Oh yeah…
Oh yeah.
