Introduction

"Haunted Souls" was inspired by something I've noticed throughout my life. My exes always seem to check out, but they never actually leave. Before anyone gets the wrong idea, there are no benefits, no secret hookups, and no desire to get back together. I'm friends with all five of my exes and friendship is exactly where it stays. The funny thing is that some of them would happily jump back in if given half a chance, but once I've moved on, I've moved on.

The only exception is my ex-husband. He turned out to be a possessive control freak who wanted my full attention every minute he was home. He'd even send the kids to their rooms because if he didn't have my undivided attention, he wasn't interested. Needless to say, that didn't last. I dumped him and never looked back.

What fascinated me over the years was that relationships end, people move on, lives change, yet somehow those people never completely disappear. A random message arrives. A memory pops up. Someone mentions their name. They may have left the relationship, but they never quite leave your life.

The Story Behind "Haunted Souls"

For years I've loved the Eagles classic "Hotel California". One line always stuck with me: "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave." Every time I heard it, I thought about my own experiences and relationships. It perfectly described what I'd seen happen time and time again.

One day I decided to stop thinking about it and write my own haunting song from a woman's perspective. Not a breakup song. Not a revenge song. Not a love song. A song about the strange reality that some people become permanent characters in your story whether you want them there or not, or n my case I become their haunted memory.

That's where the lyrics came from. The idea that people can drift away physically while still occupying space in your memories. They move on with their lives, but part of them remains behind. In many ways the song is saying, "Go wherever you want. Live your life. But don't pretend our chapter never happened."

While the song is based on my own experiences, I suspect many listeners will recognise the feeling. Most people have somebody from their past who checked out years ago but somehow never completely left.

The Music and Vibe

Musically, "Haunted Souls" is pure anthemic rock from start to finish. Big guitars, driving drums, soaring melodies and enough energy to shake the walls. The track steadily builds before exploding into one of my favourite endings on any Chuck A Beat release.

The guitar work on this track is absolutely phenomenal. Towards the end the song launches into an extended guitar section that runs for approximately one minute and fifteen seconds, packed with powerful riffs, soaring melodies and the kind of rock energy that makes you want to turn the volume up even further. Combined with the punchy drum performance throughout, the instrumentation gives the song a huge cinematic feel.

The vocalist was recommended to me by a fellow musician and from the moment I heard him sing I knew he'd brought exactly the right voice to the track. He understood the emotion, confidence and attitude behind the lyrics and delivered a performance that lifted the song to another level. I think he's done an amazing job on it.

The result is a powerful rock anthem that blends reflection, attitude and unforgettable guitar work into a song that stays with you long after the final note fades away.
