“Ghosts From My Past” was written after a deep late-night conversation with my daughter about childhood memories, emotional scars, and how differently people process pain as adults. I’ve always been someone who moves forward quickly in life without dwelling on the past, even though I remember almost every detail of my life since I was four years old, from tiny moments to old phone numbers from decades ago. One night while talking about her counselling session, my daughter explained that she had started looking back on parts of her childhood differently as an adult. I responded by reminding her that at the time she had loved travelling and living across different countries, but she replied with something that stuck with me deeply: “You can’t measure someone else’s pain, because everybody feels things differently.” That perspective became the inspiration behind Verse 4 of the song.

The Story Behind "Ghosts From My Past"

The song explores the idea that everybody carries ghosts from their past in different ways. Some people hold onto pain for years while others learn to release it and keep moving forward.

Growing up, I experienced daily violence from my father, but I also learned something important at a young age. No matter how much we replay the past in our minds, we can't change it. By the time I was thirteen, I had already realised that dwelling on yesterday wasn't helping me build tomorrow.

Music became my counsellor. While some people talk through their problems, I worked through mine by listening to storytelling songs and losing myself in the stories of others. Music helped me make sense of difficult experiences, process emotions, and eventually move forward.

"Ghosts From My Past" isn't about pretending pain never existed. It's about acknowledging it, learning from it, and refusing to let it define your future. We all carry scars from somewhere, but sooner or later we have to decide whether we're going to keep reliving those moments or finally put them behind us where they belong.

Finding the right singer for this song proved just as important as writing it. I knew the track needed a gritty, husky voice capable of delivering both vulnerability and emotional release, and that wasn't easy to find. After spending several months searching through my usual singer acquisition channels, one of my musicians recommended a vocalist named Totoula Mangas. Although she had plenty of live performance experience, she had never recorded in a professional studio before. The moment I heard her voice, however, I knew the search was over. She brought exactly the raw emotion, strength, and authenticity the song needed, transforming the lyrics into something even more powerful than I had imagined.
