“Ghosts” was written in late 2025 after I watched Season 7 of The Kardashians with my daughter at her house. In one of the episodes, Kylie Jenner talked about believing her house was haunted and being too frightened to sleep there alone. Her sisters even went over to stay with her, but eventually she said she was so uncomfortable in the house that she moved out. Naturally, my songwriter brain took that story and wandered off in its own direction.

The Story Behind "Ghosts"

Personally, I don’t believe in ghosts or the paranormal. I tend to believe in things I’ve actually witnessed or can explain. But that doesn’t mean I haven’t woken up in the middle of the night, half asleep, heard some strange noise somewhere in the house and wondered for a few seconds what the hell it was.

Most of those mysterious nighttime noises have perfectly ordinary explanations. Buildings expand and contract as temperatures change, timber moves, pipes make noises and houses creak. In daylight, none of it seems particularly frightening. Hear exactly the same sound at two o’clock in the morning when the entire house is dark and suddenly your half-asleep imagination becomes remarkably creative.

That became the starting point for “Ghosts.” I wanted to combine the idea of someone genuinely believing their house was haunted with the much more familiar experience of waking up to a bump in the night and briefly scaring yourself silly. Sometimes the scream you hear might even turn out to be your own, which is exactly what happens in the opening verse.

From there, I decided there was no point taking the ghost too seriously. If some supernatural freeloader really was wandering around my house, jumping on my bed and keeping me awake, I’d probably be more annoyed than impressed. So the song gradually turns into an argument with the unwanted visitor. It can go haunt the Kardashians, party with the dead or find somewhere else to spend the night, because it certainly isn’t paying rent at my place.

By the bridge, any attempt at being genuinely spooky has completely fallen apart. Casper gets accused of farting, the ghost apparently leaves a skid mark and eventually faces the ultimate eviction notice: sage, insults and a desperate call for Ghostbusters. “Ghosts” was never intended to answer whether the paranormal exists. It’s simply having fun with the fact that even people who don’t believe in ghosts can still hear a mysterious noise in the dark and think, for one tiny moment… what the hell was that? Yeah...and don't forget the classic call to Kris Jenner in the middle of the night to solve the problem as they always do...LOL

The Music and Vibe

Musically, “Ghosts” is driven mainly by heavy bass and drums, with subtle guitar and synth elements sitting underneath the track. I wanted the production to feel dark and slightly haunting without turning the song into outright horror, because the lyrics are constantly pulling the mood back toward comedy.

The beat has a playful, spooky character that gives me a similar kind of feeling to the famous Addams Family theme: creepy enough to establish the atmosphere, but with a wink behind it rather than genuine menace. That combination suited the song perfectly because “Ghosts” lives somewhere between a midnight scare and laughing at yourself five minutes later for being frightened by a creaking house.

The opening “La-la ti la” immediately sets up that slightly strange, theatrical atmosphere before the first verse drops us into the bedroom. From there, the bass and drums give the song its weight while the smaller guitar and synth details help create the sense that something might be lurking just outside the light. The spoken reactions throughout the song, including “Not cool,” “Their problem,” “Please” and “Grow up,” keep puncturing the tension before it has any chance of becoming too serious.

By the final chorus, the frightened person from the beginning has taken control and is throwing the ghost out. Then the outro delivers one final reversal. After spending the entire song telling the ghost to get lost and insisting she isn’t afraid, there’s only one sensible thing left to do: yell for Mom and call Ghostbusters.
