"Cockatoo Got Game" was inspired by something I've experienced more times than I care to remember... hearing just about every terrible pick-up line imaginable. Over the years I've been on the receiving end of countless cheesy chat-up attempts, and one day I found myself wondering, what if those exact same lines came from a cockatoo instead of a person? The mental image was so ridiculous that I couldn't stop laughing, and before long the lyrics began writing themselves.

Rather than telling a typical love story, the song turns one of Australia's most intelligent birds into an overconfident flirt who shamelessly recycles every cringe-worthy line he's ever heard. The result is a playful, tongue-in-cheek comedy that celebrates the fact that sometimes the funniest ideas come from simply looking at everyday life from a completely different perspective.

The Story Behind "Cockatoo Got Game"

Although it wasn't the inspiration behind the song, it immediately reminded me of my ex father-in-law's pet cockatoo, which was believed to be around 70 years old. Every single time someone walked near its perch it would politely ask, "Polly wants a cracker?" Before anyone had a chance to answer, it would suddenly shout, "Fuck off!" at the top of its lungs. The timing was absolutely perfect every single time.

The funniest part was that my ex father-in-law was a devoted Catholic who hated the bird swearing, but the kids had taught it those words years earlier and there was simply no changing its vocabulary. Visitors never quite knew whether they were about to receive a polite greeting or be loudly abused by a feathered comedian. Stories like that remind us why cockatoos have earned a reputation for being some of Australia's funniest and most unpredictable birds.
