"Catch Me If You Can" was written out of pure frustration one night after YouTube decided to show one of my Shorts to a grand total of eighteen people. Eighteen. After spending hours creating content, filming, editing, uploading, and trying to grow an audience, YouTube's algorithm once again seemed determined to bury the video before anyone even had a chance to see it. That night I jokingly nicknamed YouTube's algorithm "a boy with no joy", and considering YouTube belongs to Google, I figured his mum must be Google herself.

While the song began as a cheeky response to social media frustration, it quickly grew into something much bigger. At its heart, "Catch Me If You Can" is about confidence, resilience, independence, and refusing to let anyone hold you back. Whether the song reminds listeners of a frustrating algorithm, a controlling relationship, a jealous ex, a toxic friendship, or anyone who has ever tried to stand in their way, the message remains the same, keep moving forward and never give your power away.

The Story Behind "Catch Me If You Can"

Built around attitude, swagger, humour, and unapologetic confidence, "Catch Me If You Can" delivers a playful but powerful message. The song follows a woman who knows exactly who she is, knows exactly where she's going, and refuses to waste time on people who underestimate her. Every verse pushes back against negativity while every chorus reinforces the idea that true strength comes from within.

The phrase "boy with no joy" became the centrepiece of the song, evolving from a joke about social media algorithms into a universal character that listeners can apply to anyone who brings negativity into their lives. The Music and Vibe

Musically, "Catch Me If You Can" blends modern pop attitude with playful hip-hop influences, sharp lyrical hooks, and a confident vocal delivery. The production supports the song's larger-than-life personality while allowing the lyrics and character to remain front and centre.

Finding the right singer for this track was critical. Songs with attitude only work when the vocalist genuinely understands the character and emotion behind the lyrics. If the singer doesn't feel the song, the listener won't feel it either.

For this recording I used an experienced Melbourne-based session singer who regularly performs with cover bands. The demo she sent back immediately stood out because she understood the humour, confidence, cheekiness, and energy the song needed from the very beginning. Her vocal performance captured exactly the attitude I had imagined while writing the lyrics and helped bring the character of the song to life.
